Yamaha is a Japanese corporation that makes a wide range of different products – from electronics to motorbikes and power sports equipment. It is also widely known for the manufacturer of high quality musical instruments and recording equipment.
The company was founded in 1887 by Torakusu Yamaha, and started off by making pianos and organs under the name Nippon Gakki Company.
Yamaha then grew at an exponential rate, and their manufacturing expertise were in demand throughout the two World Wars.
Following World War II Yamaha made the decision to capitalise on their work during the war and established Yamaha Motor Co. to produce motorcycles.
Yamaha is now the world’s largest musical instrument manufacturer, with a product range that includes pianos, clavinovas, brass instruments, drums, violins, violas and guitars – electric, acoustic, electro-acoustic and bass.
Yamaha electric guitars
Yamaha began producing electric guitars in the 1960’s with their ‘SG’ Series – which stands for ‘Solid Guitar’ i.e. solid body guitars.
The SG Series was developed by Yamaha with a simple aim: to be the best electric guitar in the world! They based the design of the SG range on the more popular electric guitars of the time, but rather than copy designs Yamaha reinterpreted every element of electric guitars from the ground up.

The Yamaha RGX and RGZ series of electric guitars were introduced in the 1980’s, and were largely based on the Ibanez RG range of guitars, the Jackson Soloist and other premium models that aped the successful Fender Stratocaster guitar.

Another popular line of Yamaha electric guitars is the award-winning Pacifica range, which combines a vintage aesthetic with modern performance values. Pacifica guitars are player-focused and are designed to be comfortable and versatile.
Yamaha acoustic guitars
As well as a great range of electric guitars, Yamaha also make a wide selection of high quality acoustic guitars. Some of their more popular ranges of acoustic guitars are:
The Yamaha F310 acoustic guitar offers an outstanding playing experience. It has become a very popular acoustic option as it is priced very affordably for such a high-quality guitar.
The FG Series of acoustic guitars from Yamaha is their longest standing line of acoustic guitars, and have become synonymous with fantastic playability and brilliant sound and tone.
The FG750s is at the very top of Yamaha’s FG range, and is built to provide unique looks and a distinctive sound.
This guitar is made with a solid Sitka Spruce top and Sycamore back and sides, which provide it with warmth and amazing definition. It also features tortoiseshell machine heads and binding all wrapped up in the trademark FG Series ultra-thin design.
The APX500 is built to be played on the stage, and has a design that focuses on playability and style. It’s a great electro-acoustic guitar that gives performance-class acoustic tone when put through an amp.
The C40 was a very popular classic guitar from Yamaha, as it was a solid classical acoustic guitar that came at a very affordable price.
The C40 has now been discontinued, but it’s many great features live on in the C70 and C8 models.
